Permit to carry classes
  -  Minnesota / Multi-State recognition


Minnesota approved training organization and recognized by several states which accept training by a NRA certified instructor.


This is a Minnesota permit to carry course approved by the state of Minnesota.  This is not a NRA course, but was developed specifically for Minnesota to meet requirements and give a student a solid background in the carrying of a firearn for self defense in Minnesota.  Because this class is taught by a NRA certified instructor, it is recognized by several other states when applying for a permit to carry a firearm. *NOTE:  This course is a Minnesota permit to carry course and requires a basic knowledge of a handgun.  This course is not a basic or introduction to handguns, although some basics are covered, this is a Minnesota permit to carry course.

River Valley Training has scheduled and are doing classes that are not posted publicly, they are usually for a private groups or organization and not open for public enrollment.  Please contact us if a posted regular class does not fit into your schedule, there are occasions that seats are available in some of these private classes.

A regular Minnesota new or renewal permit to carry classstarts at $75, but can vary depending on location, number of students and local fees associated with that class.  These prices do include all range fees and paperwork that is needed to apply for a Minnesota permit to carry.

If a student does not currently have a handgun, either a pistol or revolver with ammunition are available from River Valley Training to use for the class.  This should be arrange prior to the class date to ensure that the needed firearm and ammunition is available on the day of the class.


Utah permit to carry classes


For past River Valley Training students the Utah training it is an additional $35.  The Utah training covers the required outline set forth by the Utah BCI and includes the permit to carry application signed by the Utah certified instructor and stamped with the Utah instructor's official seal.  

If you have taken your past Minnesota permit to carry training from River Valley Training, the cost for the Utah course is $35.  If you are not a former River Valley Training student, the fee for the Utah course is $75 to $100 depending on location, number of students and any addition local fees associated with the class location.

There are no Utah classes scheduled at this time, but will be scheduled by requests.

NRA - FIRST Steps - Pistol  

This is the NRA's beginner's course called First Steps that is designed for the novice shooter and is a good place to start for both men and women.  It is approximately 3 - 4 hours long with a hands-on technique and covers the basics such as handgun nomenclature, ammunition, the safe operation of a handgun and concludes with the opportunity to fire .22 rimfire handgun on the range.  Cost for the NRA FIRST Steps Course is $65 per person and seating is very limited, so please register early to reserve your seat.

Handgun Skills Course


This course is for the shooter that wants to advance their holster and handgun skills.  This is not a course for those that want to shoot a lot of ammunition, but designed around the proper technique and execution of the fundamentals of operating their handgun.  This course covers the correct and safe draw, firing and holstering of a handgun while wearing a concealment garment.  The basics of the proper grip, types of magazine reloads, clearing a malfunction and sight/trigger control.  Range exercises covers several shooting exercises including single and multiple target engagement while firing multiple shots, shooting on the move, strong hand/weak hand only shooting, proper turning and firing.  This course requires that the student supply -
 - Eye and ear protection
 - Concealment garment
 - 200 rounds of factory ammunition
 - Handgun in a minimum caliber of 9mm Luger (9x19) or .38 Special
 - A strong side belt holster and if an IWB holster is used, it must have a re-enforced mouth
     (no cross draw, shoulder, SOB, fanny pack, etc. type holsters for range safety reasons)
 - Dual magazine holder and 3 magazines or 2-3 speed loaders

This equipment is required as described to do the live fire exercises on the range.  If there is any questions on your equipment, please contact us before the class date to avoid any problems on the day of the class.  Cost for this Handgun Skills Course is $100 per person and is limited to 4-8 students per class.

Federal Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 - HR 218

Instruction and Firearms Training Standards for Retired Law Enforcement Officers in Minnesota.  Rick Bruels is an approved instructor for retired Law Enforcement Officers that is recognized in Minnesota for the certification that meets Minnesota Department of Public Safety Firearms Training Standards.  This course follows the state of Minnesota guidelines as required to apply for the federal carry permit for retired LEO's.  This class is offered as required at the request of retired Minnesota Law Enforcement Officers.  Cost for this class starts a $25 and up depending on number attending, location and any other fees associated with the class location.
